Hunting, Fishing & Wildlife

  • Hunting: The Pratt area and surrounding counties offer some of the richest hunting opportunities in the state.
Bird hunting opportunities include prairie chicken, duck, turkey, canada goose, and sandhill crane. Turkey and deer are considered big game and require the purchase of a game tag in addition to a hunting license.
  • Fishing: Sport fishing species include small and largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, striper, wiper and walleye. Fishing regulations on the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks Fishing website.
  • Wildlife Viewing: Wildlife in the Pratt area is abundant. There is easy access to world class bird watching, peaking during spring and fall migrations at nearby state and federal wildlife areas.
Cheyenne Bottoms, Quivira National Wildlife Refuge, Pratt Sandhills and Texas Lake are all located within a short distance. The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks is an excellent resource.
  • Pratt Sandhills & Texas Lake: These wildlife areas have unique sand prairie habitats and are the eastern most range of the lesser prairie chicken in Kansas. The birds gather at their booming grounds from late March to early May.
To observe the behavior of these birds you'll have to get there before sunrise. The marshy areas and draws attract waterfowl and shorebirds, while a variety of mammals and reptiles can be found area wide.

Parks

Pratt is proud of its 193 acres of parks. Once a tallgrass prairie, Pratt is now known as "A tree city" and the parks system continues to be developed for all and future generations.

  • Lemon Park is approximately 117 acres, the largest of the parks in Pratt. Park features include a nature trail, wood sculptures, ball diamonds, sand volleyball courts, pond, play equipment, picnic tables, shelter houses, gazebo and lighted walking path.
The park is named after George Lemon who took a personal interest in landscaping, introducing a variety of non-native trees to the area. About 80 varieties of trees survive today. These trees are the city's natural treasures and the park is used extensively for walking, roller blading, ball games, picnicking and enjoying nature. Several wood sculptures by artist Clayton Coss are located in the park.
  • Avenue of Flags marks the entrance to Pratt's 193 acre park system. In the backdrop of the flags you will notice a welcoming Lady Liberty. The park is located near the intersection of Stout and Highway 54.
  • Graves Park & Walter Blake Tennis Complex: The park and lighted tennis courts, located just south of the Kinney Memorial Swimming Pool on South Rochester, contain ten tennis courts plus handball courts.
  • South Main Street Park is located near the heart of Pratt and offers basketball courts, picnic and playground areas, and a skate park.
  • Swimming Pool: The Ellis D. Kinney Swimming Pool, just north of the tennis courts, is the state's second largest municipal swimming pool complete with water slide.
  • Zerger Park is located in the 100 block of South Thompson Street and Highway 54. A summertime wading pool is open to toddlers from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. A stone picnic shelter welcomes the weary traveler or a family get together. New playground equipment includes a handicap accessible swing.
  • Centennial Park at Third Street and Thompson is ideal for family reunions or large groups. The picnic area has a concrete stage for live entertainment, and the tree shaded area lends itself to public events.
  • Cherry Street Park is located between School, Curtis and Cherry Streets. In the summer the small ball diamond draws a neighborhood baseball game, while a winter snow attracts sledders to the gentle but fun slope on the east side.
  • Champa Street Park offers a sheltered picnic area, playground equipment and restroom facilities.
  • Gebhart Park is a favorite play site for small children because of its equipment and sheltered picnic area. The park is located at Hamilton and Second Streets. The summer time wading pool is open from 1:00pm - 4:00 pm.
